[C.elegansII] NMK. Encodes 75 aa metallothionein; accumulates after exposure to CdCl2. mtl-1:lacZ expressed constitutively in pharynx, and in intestine after cadmium treatment or heat shock; response lower in adult. [Freedman et al. 1993]
mtl-1 encodes one of two C. elegans metallothioneins, small, cysteine-rich, metal-binding proteins; MTL-1 functions in metal detoxification and homeostasis and in stress adaptation; in addition, mtl-1 plays a role in regulating growth and fertility; mtl-1 is constitutively expressed in the terminal bulb of the pharynx and expression is induced in larval intestinal cells following exposure to cadmium, heat shock, while its expressed is repressed in response to P. aeruginosa infection; intestinal expression is dependent upon ELT-2, an intestine-specific GATA-type transcription factor; mtl-1 is upregulated by DAF-16 in daf-2 mutants.
Enables cadmium ion binding activity and zinc ion binding activity. Involved in response to heat and response to metal ion. Predicted to be located in cytoplasm. Expressed in intestine; pharynx; and terminal bulb.
Map position created from combination of previous interpolated map position (based on known location of sequence) and allele information. Therefore this is not a genetic map position based on recombination frequencies or genetic experiments. This was done on advice of the CGC.
