[Gu T] sur-5 for suppressors of ras. Mutations in sur-5 suppress the vulvaless phenotype caused by let-60(sy94) dominant negative mutation. sur-5 mutations have no phenotype on their own.
sur-5 encodes a protein with high similarity to H. sapiens Acetoacetyl-coenzyme A synthetase; sur-5 negatively regulates let-60 during vulval induction, based on genetic analysis, and genetically synergises with lin-45 with respect to larval death, uncoordinated movement and egg-laying defects; sur-5 is strongly expressed in most cells of C. elegans, including the VPCs, and is localized primarily to the nucleus.
Predicted to enable acetoacetate-CoA ligase activity. Predicted to be involved in fatty acid metabolic process. Predicted to be located in cytoplasm and nucleus. Expressed in several structures, including P3.p hermaphrodite; P4.p hermaphrodite; gonad; hypodermal cell; and somatic cell. Is an ortholog of human AACS (acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase).
sur-5 is located on a 8kb BamHI fragment that overlaps both K03A1 and R12E12. R12E12 also rescues ku74. The allele ku74 is a inframe deletion that deletes 295 n.t. of the sur-5 genomic sequence.
