unc-50 encodes an integral membrane protein orthologous to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Golgi component Gmh1p; UNC-50 is required for regulating subtype-specific ionotropic acetylcholine receptor trafficking to the cell surface and thus, for normal synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction; UNC-50 is ubiquitously expressed from early embryogenesis to adulthood and localizes to the Golgi.
Involved in receptor localization to synapse and regulation of muscle contraction. Located in Golgi membrane. Expressed in several structures, including alimentary muscle; gonad; intestine; neurons; and vulval muscle. Is an ortholog of human UNC50 (unc-50 inner nuclear membrane RNA binding protein).
