ceh-43 encodes a homeobox protein of the Distal-less (Dll) class that is required for development of the anterior hypodermis during embryonic morphogenesis for cell adhesion; ceh-43 affects embryonic and larval viability; it is predominantly expressed in the head hypdodermis, neuronal support cells and CAN neurons.
