Human liver carboxylesterases, CES1, CES2 and CES3 (orthologous to C. elegans T28C12.4), metabolize and detoxify drugs and toxins; CESs metabolize ester, thioester, carbamate and amide compounds to acid, alcohol and amine products; mutations in CES1 are associated with Carboxylesterase 1 deficiency.
