tank-1 (formerly known as pme-5) encodes a protein containing N-terminal ankyrin repeats and C-terminal poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) regulatory and catalytic domains that is orthologous to human tankyrase 1 (TNKS; OMIM:603303) and tankyrase 2 (TNKS2; OMIM: 607128), but structurally more similar to the ADPRT-3 tankyrase of Dictyostelium discoideum; TANK-1 also contains a lysine-rich region, a WGR domain, which may mediate DNA interaction, and a coil-coiled region; X-ray-induced apoptosis of germ cells is slightly increased in tank-1(RNAi) animals; DNA damage via ionizing radiation induces tank-1 expression, and this induction absolutely requires HUS-1; TANK-1 is ubiquitously expressed throughout the life cycle, including in the germ line, and localizes to the nucleus.
Predicted to enable NAD+ ADP-ribosyltransferase activity and NAD+-protein ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. Involved in intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in response to DNA damage; negative regulation of programmed cell death; and response to gamma radiation. Located in nucleus.

Map position created from combination of previous interpolated map position (based on known location of sequence) and allele information. Therefore this is not a genetic map position based on recombination frequencies or genetic experiments. This was done on advice of the CGC.
