PhenotypeWBPhenotype:0000050RemarkWhen treated with dsRNA from the capping enzyme gene (cel-1), 100% of the embryos failed to hatch. One- or two-cell cel1(RNAi) embryos contained cytoplasmic granules not usually seen in wild-type embryos. These granules, however, are commonly observed when other genes predicted to function in mRNA processing are tested. Despite the presence of aberrant cytoplasmic granules, other basic cell biological events appeared normal during the first embryonic cell divisions, consistent with the idea that these early stages are not dependent on newly transcribed genes. However, analysis of terminal phenotypes showed defects that included embryos with no gut granules (94%, n = 79) but variable levels of differentiation including twitching (a sign of muscle differentiation) and other cell types. Similar results were obtained by feeding dsRNA.
