Remark | Spermatocytes fail to complete meiosis; they remain as large, round cells with a granular appearance under differential interference contrast microscopy, and they fail to form spermatids. All defective spermatocytes showed multiple DAPI-positive regions. Nearly half had four condensed DAPI-positive regions, the remaining spermatocytes had more than four DAPI staining regions. Remark | In spe-26 mutant spermatocytes, the fibrous body-membranous organelle (FB-MO) complex disassembles in the spermatocytes themselves and the major sperm protein (MSP) filaments disperse. The MO membranes do fold into a compact structure, but they become distended.
