PatternIn wild-type animals, ubiquitous nuclear staining was observed from oogenesis through to midembryo genesis. SEX-1 expression peaked at the onset of gastrulation (at about the 28 to 100-cell stage), then gradually diminished, becoming undetectable by the end of embryonic cell proliferation (the 550-cell stage).

Staining was not detected in homozygous y263 or gm41 mutant embryos, confirming the specificity of SEX-1 antibodies and the reduction of gene function in sex-1 mutants.
