TreatmentAnimals were grown in liquid RNAi cultures for 2 days and then irradiated at 120 Gy on NGM plates with corresponding RNAi foods by using a Gammacell 1000 (Cs-137) irradiator with a dose rate of 6 Gy/min. For observation of germline apoptosis, the worms were soaked in acridine orange (1% v/v) in M9 for 4 hours, 20 hours after irradiation. After washing and 1 hour recovery on bacterial food, the number of apoptotic bodies was quantified with a Nomarski microscope.

PhenotypeWBPhenotype:0000184RemarkRNAi results in a decreased number of apoptotic bodies in the "apoptotic zone" of the germ line after irradiation compared to wild type, suggesting that germ cells are allowed to proliferate even in the presence of DNA damage.
