nep-22 encodes two isoforms of a neprilysin; neprilysins are thermolysin-like zinc metallopeptidases, found on the outer surface of animal cells, that negatively regulate small signalling peptides (e.g., enkephalin, tachykinin, insulin, and natriuretic peptides) by cleaving them; NEP-22 is orthologous to Ac-mep-1, a gut luminal neprilysin which is specifically expressed in the adult life stage of Ancylostoma caninum hookworms, and whose protein product is localized to the microvilli of the gastrointestinal tract, suggesting a role in digestion.
Map position created from combination of previous interpolated map position (based on known location of sequence) and allele information. Therefore this is not a genetic map position based on recombination frequencies or genetic experiments. This was done on advice of the CGC.
