Structured_descriptionConcise_descriptionglt-1 encodes a predicted plasma membrane glutamate transporter that is functional when expressed in Xenopus oocytes; expressed in the M3 pharyngeal neuron, the male tail, some anterior hypodermal cells, and in cells in the terminal bulb of the pharynx.Paper_evidenceWBPaper00002546

Automated_descriptionEnables L-glutamate transmembrane transporter activity. Predicted to be involved in L-glutamate transmembrane transport. Located in cell projection. Expressed in body wall musculature; cephalic sheath cell; hypodermis; and muscle cell. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Huntington's disease; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 41. Is an ortholog of human SLC1A2 (solute carrier family 1 member 2).Paper_evidenceWBPaper00065943

Remark[Radice A] identified a putative glutamate transporter by hybridization to YAC polytene filters and subsequently sequenced the complete gene from the cosmid B0015. The gene 2.9 kb, contains nine exons and is located on the left arm of the X between vit-4 and vit-5.
This gene is very likely the same gene as glt-1 (an uncloned locus). glt-1 is known to be in clone B0015, an unsequenced clone which heavily overlaps C12D12 (the clone containing this gene). No other likely glutatmate transporters are in this region of the chromosome (as revealed from a TBLASTN search of glt-2 protein sequence) so there may only be one true glt-* gene and the different gene names (glt-1, glt-2, Ceglut-1,Ceglut-2, CeGlt-1, and CeGlt-2) are just referring to the two isoforms of this gene [krb 031029]Accession_evidenceEMBLD86740
