In vivo analysis of the expression pattern of the MRP-7 reporter fusion indicates that the protein is expressed in head neurons (as well as several other cells in the body), but the expression pattern within the head made it difficult to determine whether the protein is specifically expressed in the DA neurons. The authors therefore generated primary cultures from the RJ1089 animals (transgenic animals co-expressing YFP behind the endogenous dopamine trans- porter 1 promoter and CFP behind the endogenous MRP-7 promoter), and observed MRP-7- associated CFP fluorescence in all cells expressing YFP, indicating that the approximately 3.5 kb promoter of MRP-7 is sufficient to drive the expression of the MRP protein in DA neurons.
